Gideon I

John Koedyker

READ : Judges 6:11-16, 36-40

And Gideon said to him, “Please, sir, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this

happened to us?” (v. 13)

When God calls Gideon and tells him that he is with him, Gideon rather boldly replies,
“If the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us?” That is a question most of
us have asked God. Why do so many innocent people die? Why is our country going through
such an economic downturn? Why did I lose my job? Why is our church struggling so? Why,
why, why?

We see in Gideon a kind of tentative faith that wants proof that God really is there
and really does care. And who can blame him? If he is going to commit his life to the
Lord, he had better know for sure that God is truly with him. So he tests God by putting
out his fleece.

For us today, the best proof that God really does care about us is Jesus Christ. “God
so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son.” Jesus is the ultimate guarantee
that the Lord is, in fact, with us. And so the answer to Paul’s question, “If God be for
us, who can be against us?” is a resounding “No one!”
