READ : Genesis 9:8-17
I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and
the earth. (v. 13)
Can you remember the magic moment when you saw your first rainbow? You were a child,
and someone said: “Look! A rainbow!” And you looked, and there it was, stretching across
the sky, an arch of pure color—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet. How
In the Bible, the rainbow symbolizes the solemn promise of God that life will go on.
After the flood, God vowed that he would never again destroy all life. As a token of his
promise, God put a rainbow in the clouds, right there at eye level where he’d be sure to
see it. The rainbow, said Calvin, is an Old Testament sacrament, a visible sign that
conveys a spiritual promise—life will go on.
God has vowed never to destroy life on earth. But what about us? Planet Earth is a
nuclear porcupine, with more than 50,000 missiles at hair-trigger readiness. The more
nations arm themselves for nuclear war, the closer we come to its occurrence. Pray for
peace and disarmament. Surely, what is too terrible for God to do is too terrible for us
to do. God will never break his promise. Pray that we do not put him to the test.
Lord, let there be peace on earth. Amen.
