The Testimony of a Blind Man

READ : John 9:35-38

“Do you believe in the Son of man?” . . . “Lord, I believe” and he worshiped him. (vv.

35, 38)

The man had spent his entire life in darkness, without sight or hope. But one day Jesus
found him, and Jesus, incredibly, opened his eyes. With uncharacteristic insight this
uneducated blind man gave a statement that infuriated the clergy who were examining him:
“Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born
blind. If [Jesus] were not from God, he could do nothing” (vv. 32-33).

Yes, the Light of the World had laid his hands on the man’s eyes (vv. 6-7). For the
first time in his life he could see. But the story gets better. Jesus also shined his
light into the blind beggar’s dark heart and gave him spiritual sight. No wonder this
simple man was prepared to answer without hesitation the question Jesus asked him: “Do you
believe in the Son of man?” (v. 35).

He replied, “Lord, I believe” (v. 38). And he bowed before the divine Sight-giver and
worshiped him. Astonishingly, Jesus accepted his worship. If he were not God, that act
would be one of high treason and vile blasphemy against the King of heaven. But the
once-blind man could see who Jesus truly was and becomes the fourth witness to Christ’s
