Remember Who Is in Control

I am he who will sustain you. (46:4 NIV)

Investment portfolios shrink, home values plunge; employers are forced to break the tough news to their employees: their jobs no longer exist. Savings are depleted, bills go unpaid, budgets are slashed or frozen. These are familiar realities encountered in the past year. Should we panic, resort to desperation, or stop loving our neighbor in order to take care of ourselves? Isaiah writes to a similar situation when things looked bleak.

Even before the people of God were carried into exile, Isaiah spoke God’s word to them there, assuring Israel that God is always in control. He is the one who sustains, carries, strengthens, and upholds. Even within chaos and insecurity, he is God and there is no other.

When things turn sour, remember who is in control. Live with a heavenly perspective and never forget that God loves you. Live by faith in the Lord who assures us, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no will can snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:27-28 NIV). That’s a gift that cannot be taken away!

Heavenly Father, help me, regardless of situation or loss, to live by faith that you are in control. Amen.
