READ : Mark 10:17-31
Go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. (v. 21)
Has it ever occurred to you that the wealth God allows you to accumulate may not be for you, but for the benefit of others? Jesus told the rich young man to go, sell everything he had, and give it to the poor. “Then come follow me.” The giving away was for the sake of the coming and the following. Mark says that “Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘You lack one thing,’ he said.” Jesus could tell that the rich young man thought he was obeying the commandments, but he had trouble giving his wealth away.
According to Jesus, following him involves putting God’s desires ahead of our own. We need to value treasure in heaven ahead of treasure on earth. Jesus commends those who sacrifice the luxury of earthly relationships to enter the mission field and proclaim the gospel (vv. 29-30).
God gives to us so that we might give to others. Our material blessings can help the poor but not when our fist (or heart) is clenched. When we release our grip on earthly treasures is when we find the heavenly ones. So, who can you bless today?
Lord, loosen my grip on material things so I share your blessings with others. Amen.
