READ : Revelation 5:1-10
Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written
within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. (v. 1)
Now John sees in the right hand of the One on the throne a scroll. It’s a kind of book,
with writing on both sides, sealed with seven seals. It’s God’s book, God’s secret
purposes for history, God’s scroll of human destiny.
Search is made in all the universe for someone worthy to open the scroll. But no one is
found. John weeps bitterly. How then will God’s wonderful saving plan unfold?
But one of the elders quiets his mourning. “Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the
Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” Then
John sees a Lamb, bearing the marks of death, yet standing near the throne. The Lamb takes
the scroll from the hand of the One seated there.
Then all the heavenly beings fall in worship before the Lamb, with harps of praise and
offerings of prayer. They sing a new song, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open
its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every
tribe and language and people and nation.”
The only one worthy to open the scroll, to usher in the coming kingdom is the slain
Lamb, by whose poured-out life sinners around the world are redeemed. The crucified and
risen Jesus is the Lord of history!
Thank you, Lord Jesus, that our future is in your nail-pierced hands.
