Anticipating the New Heaven and New Earth

READ : 1 Corinthians 2:9; Revelation 22:3

No longer will there be any curse. (Rev. 22:3 NIV)

Chicago Cubs fans are still waiting to “reverse the curse” that some feel has kept
their team from winning the World Series for more than a century. Believers don’t have to
wonder if the curse of sin will be reversed. Revelation 22:3 reminds us that in the new
heaven and new earth there will no longer be any curse of sin. The third stanza of “Joy
to the World” proclaims that Jesus Christ came to defeat sin and death, eliminating its
curse on creation and the human heart:

No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make his
blessings flow, far as the curse is found.

The new heaven and new earth will contain no death, mourning, crying, or pain (Rev.
21:4). It will contain the joy of everlasting life. The Heidelberg Catechism wonders, “How
does the article concerning `life everlasting’ comfort you?” The answer: “even as I
already now experience in my heart the beginning of eternal joy, so after this life I will
have perfect blessedness such as no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no human heart has
ever imagined: a blessedness in which to praise God eternally” (Q&A 58).

Remember: all that we experience in this world is just the cover and title page. In the
new heaven and new earth, we will experience the great story of the presence of Jesus and
the absence of sin.

Jesus, thank you for bringing joy to the world and to my heart.
