Temporary Living

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (v. 2 NIV)

When my parents and I arrived in Iowa, our new house was not completed. My brother and his family allowed us to live with them for seven weeks. Even though they were very gracious to rearrange bedrooms so I could have my own space, I was very mindful that this arrangement was only temporary. I was constantly looking forward to the day when we could move into our own house.

The apostle Paul would say that is the way that every Christian should live, always keeping in mind that this world is not our permanent residence. We should look toward our heavenly home. This perspective does not mean we just sit around biding our time in this life. It does mean that we practice heaven’s values here on earth. Instead of setting our minds on earthly things like anger, impurity, and slander we should practice the life of our true home. We should be compassionate, kind, humble, gentle, and patient. When we set our minds on heavenly things, we are living as citizens of heaven here on earth.

Even though I was eager to move into our new house, I enjoyed living with my brother’s family. It gave me an opportunity to love them like I never thought possible. We may long to move into our heavenly home, but our days here should be filled with practicing the love that is natural there.

Lord, help us to live our earthly lives in ways that glorify you.
