READ : Joel 2:18-21

Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done marvelous things! (v. 21 NKJV)

When I would greet one of my former parishioners and ask him how he was doing, he would always respond with one word, “Maaaaavelous!” This man had lived a lot of years and he knew that he was marvelous because God had done marvelous things.

In the verses we read yesterday, Joel was pleading that the people repent and return to the Lord in the hopes that the Almighty would relent and spare them the punishment they deserved. Although we are not given all the details, apparently the people of Israel did respond to the prophet’s preaching and turned away from their sins and back to God. The result was that now God was doing marvelous things for his people. The rampaging locusts were gone and God was restoring their land, giving them back the crops they needed. It was time to rejoice.

Recently in a speech Warren Buffet, one of the richest men on earth, said that some of the best advice he ever received was this: “There is no power on earth like unconditional love.” He continued, “To know you can always come back – that is huge in life.” Indeed it is. Israel found that out. Have you?

Thank you, Lord, for your marvelous, unconditional love. Amen.
