All We Need to Know

Andrea Poppleton

READ : John 14:1-6

I am the way, and the truth, and the life. (v. 6)

Today’s text is a reminder that the season of Advent not only looks back, but also forward. We are awaiting the coming of Christ as a baby in the manger, but we also await the coming of Christ in the clouds. Jesus promised the disciples, “I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (v. 3 NIV). And then he added, “You know the way to the place where I am going” (v. 4).

This past May, when hype about the rapture and the world’s end hit the news, we were reminded how some people get wrapped up (and tripped up) in all the details of Jesus’ Second Coming. They brought renewed attention to the questions surrounding Jesus’ promise to return, and although they thought they had the answers, their focus on numerology fell flat. Why? Because enjoying Jesus’ return has nothing to do with cracking a code of scriptural numbers. Instead, as Jesus taught his disciples, enjoying Jesus’ return has everything to do with knowing “the way” to the place where Jesus will take his followers when he comes. Thomas asked, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” (v. 5). Jesus responded, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (v. 6).

If we seek Jesus, we will find the way. If we know Jesus, we will know the truth. If we live life with Jesus now, we will live with him for eternity.

Jesus, knowing you is all I need to know. Amen.
