The Testimony of the Old Testament

Verlyn Verbrugge

READ : John 5:31-40

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me. (John 5:39)

Nobody likes a braggart! Braggarts are always talking about themselves, and they think there is no one else like them. Even if that's true, it's better to let others testify to it!

Jesus acknowledges this in John 5. “If my only claim to fame is my words, that doesn't mean much,” he says in effect (5:31). So he goes on to tell us who and what else testifies on his behalf.

John the Baptist: John said Jesus was so great that he felt unworthy to untie his shoes (Luke 3:16). God the Father: he testified at Jesus' baptism that we must listen to his Son (5:37). Miraculous signs: Jesus did miracles to show he was the Christ (5:36; 20:30-31). The Scriptures: the Old Testament testifies that Jesus is the promised Messiah of Israel (5:39).

This series of meditations will focus on the last of these witnesses. In fact, I will focus on only one Old Testament book, Genesis, and will point out either where Jesus is active in that book or where there are prophecies that he fulfilled. I hope to reassure you through these messages that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have eternal life (John 20:30-31).

Lord Jesus, confirm my faith from the Scriptures that you are the greatest person who ever lived. Amen
