Arrangements Have Been Made

READ : Ephesians 1:3-10

He is before all things. (Col. 1:17)

I once saw a modern art exhibit that featured a piece called “3 Ball Bearings: One Dropped, One Placed, One Thrown.” Sure enough, there on the carpet were three ball bearings—and that was it. It would be easy to mock this “art,” but the key to the piece was the title, which suggested that before we ever saw the exhibit, an artist was there arranging it. It's a humbling reminder that reality doesn't begin with us. Arrangements have been made before we ever show up.

Paul reminds us of even more significant arrangements that were made prior to our arrival. Jesus lived and loved even before creation came to be: “He is before all things.” And before the creation of the world, we were not only chosen in Christ (Eph. 1:4) but also given grace in Christ (2 Tim. 1:9) and promised eternal life (Titus 1:2). Not to mention all that Jesus did when he came to earth long before we were born.

It's very tempting for people today to think of themselves as self-made men and women, constructing their own identity and writing their own script on the blank pages of their lives. But that's not the way of the Christian. We are God-made, given our identity in Christ, and following the script of God's story for our lives in this world. Jesus has gone before us, and we are glad to follow his steps.

Thank you, Lord, for all that you did for me before I ever came to be.
