READ : John 7:37-39
Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (v. 38)
One of my favorite demonstrations to use for teaching children involves a candle and two balloons. One balloon is filled with air, the other with water. As I hold the air-filled balloon over the candle flame and begin to lower it, most children usually cover their ears, anticipating the loud pop as the balloon explodes. Then I repeat with the water-filled balloon. The children again cover their ears in anticipation, but this time there is no pop. In fact, the water-filled balloon can remain in the flame for a good length of time without popping; the only effect on the balloon is a charred black “scar.”
Jesus says that when we believe in him, “out of our heart will flow rivers of living water.” When we have the living water of Jesus, we will “not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Like the candle flame, the trials of life will test us and test our faith. When a loving husband and father of three young girls passes away after a long battle with cancer, when a loyal employee is trampled by a selfish boss’s quest for power, or when a son chooses to end his relationship with his parents, the trials we endure leave physical and emotional scars. But Jesus provides the forgiveness and grace to continue in this life and share life eternal in the next. Are you filled with air or are you filled with the life-giving water of Jesus?
Lord Jesus, fill us with your living water.
