Never walk away from someone who deserves help; your hand is God’s hand for that person. (v. 27 The Message)

A friend of ours, Marie, lives in a large apartment complex with many other elderly folks. One day as Marie entered the main lobby she noticed a lady pacing back and forth. Marie asked if she could be of help. The troubled lady, who wasn’t feeling well, said, “I have a doctor’s appointment.”

“What time is your appointment?” Marie asked.

“Ten o’clock,” came the answer. It was already 10:45. Marie said, “Come with me. I’ll drive you to the doctor.”

After the doctor’s visit Marie asked if there was anything else she could do for her. The lady answered, “I have a hunger for a nice peach.” So they drove over to the nearby farmers’ market. Marie left her friend in the car while she went to pick out a peach. When the farmer learned the peach was for someone who was ill, he put it back, grabbed two of his nicest peaches, and said, “Here, give these to your friend.” Marie then drove her back to the apartment building.

When Marie told me of the incident I said, “Wow, you were really a help to her.” Marie responded, “Oh, I don’t know. Wouldn’t anyone have done the same?”

It left me wondering, would anyone have done the same? Would I? Would you?

Lord, open my eyes to the needs of others so near by.
