Undivided Love

READ : Deuteronomy 6:1-5

Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one. (v. 4 NIV)

How many e-mails have you looked at in the last month? Now add in the countless texts, tweets, and phone calls. Multiply by the number of advertisements you have seen. What do you get? Information inundation and hyperactive multitasking. As a result our attention spans have shortened our ability to sit still and be present. Our focus has been fractured.

Today’s key verse is the Shema (Hebrew for “hear”). When the Israelites rehearsed this foundational truth about the Lord, they were reminded that the Lord God is one. He is the one and only God. It was a reminder that other gods needn’t be sought out or called upon. But most importantly it emphasized how the Lord was present in a pure and undivided way. Imagine God, with you, totally undistracted, full of love, with nothing else to think about and nowhere else to be. Our God is one, Israel confessed, fully present and completely devoted.

Who in your life hopes for you to be fully present and undistracted? Do they need a careful listener, someone who will not be preoccupied or in a hurry to move on to the next thing? Take comfort today in knowing God’s singular devotion, experience God’s undivided love, and let it teach you how to love those around you.

Lord, open us to this mysterious reality; you love each one of us with your whole undivided heart. Amen.
