What We Live By

READ : Deuteronomy 6:20-25

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (Deut. 6:5 NIV)

If you want to know what someone truly loves, you just need to live with them for a little while. They needn’t say a word to you about their religion or beliefs. You can look at their calendar, what’s on their schedule—and what isn’t. You can sneak a peek at their checkbook. You can see how they spend their money and what they’re most excited about.

When I was in college many of the students in philosophy class enjoyed talking about different theories of goodness and how one could develop the happiest life possible. The world’s famous philosophers and theologians have different answers to questions like these. I remember most, however, the answer my professor gave: “We live by what we thrill to.” What excites us and makes us feel most alive will always become evident to those around us.

As I interact with others I endlessly and effortlessly convey to them what I truly long for and where I’m willing to invest my hope as I navigate life’s long ribbon of possibilities. I see today in these familiar words from Moses that ultimately what my life story will tell everyone is who (or what) I love the most.

What is your life saying about your ultimate love?

Lord, may your love for the world be revealed as our love for you is made known. Amen.
