Hold Fast

READ : Revelation 2:20-29

You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. (v. 20)

Every generation of Christians must ask the question: How do we maintain our faith and our witness in the midst of a culture that does not love Jesus and does not accept the authority of Scripture?

We may be a long way from Thyatira, but the public pressure to compromise our faith is as strong as it ever was. I remember a conversation, years ago, with a young woman. “I have learned,” she said, “that the only way to advance at my company is to participate in a lifestyle that I know is wrong and immoral. If you don’t go along, they close ranks against you, and you are shut out from advancement.”

Perhaps we’re not so far removed from Thyatira after all. In every generation the world asks Christians: “Can you not tolerate this? Can you not just go along?” If the answer is no, I cannot go along, then “they close ranks against you.”

To the saints in Thyatira, and to you and me, the risen Lord says, “Hold fast what you have until I come” (v. 25). Jezebels will try to downplay the devastation wrought by sexual immorality. The world will mock, marginalize, and trivialize those who dare to call sin by its real name.

But don’t give up. And don’t think you’re alone in your battle. “Fear not,” says God, “for I am with you” (Isa. 41:10).

Lord, help me withstand the pressure to conform. Amen.
