READ : Hebrews 12:1-13
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (v. 1 NIV)
To escape the snowy Iowa winter, my parents and I spent a month in an Arizona RV park. Most every afternoon Dad helped me get my swim vest on and steadied me as I got out of my wheelchair and into the pool. I have cerebral palsy and need help to balance. As I was doing my laps, sometimes people were on the pool deck cheering. I was not doing anything special, just my normal backstroke, but they cheered anyway.
The author of Hebrews wrote that a great cloud of witnesses are watching us from the grandstands of heaven. These spectators are the heroes of the faith mentioned in the previous chapter. They should inspire us to throw off the sins that can trip us up and keep pushing toward the finish line, especially as we face hardships and adversities.
As I was swimming I could not believe people were cheering for me. You may not feel you have an extraordinary life, but we do have fans in heaven. People on this earth are also observing. They are looking to see if we live up to the faith we profess. Let’s live in such a way that we give the heavenly spectators something to cheer about and the people who are watching an example to follow.
Lord, as we run this life race, help us to live well and point others to you.
