The Divine “Subversive”

I will utter hidden things, things from of old. (Ps. 78:2 NIV)

When we get discouraged in our service to Christ, it helps to remember that God commonly works behind the scenes. Most of God’s activity isn’t pictured on the daily news. Just as the seeds a farmer plants are hidden in the earth until the outburst of spring, we trust the concealed work of God until the harvest.

The media make it seem like evil is winning. But Paul reminds us, “We look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen “(2 Cor. 4:18). When in 1948 missionaries were kicked out of China there was great discouragement. Atheistic Communism appeared victorious. Yet now the church in China is the fastest growing church in the world. Had the sending church forgotten Jesus’ teaching about the mustard seed and the leaven? Consider also Latin and South America. For generations it seemed to be largely an unproductive field. Today the evangelical church there is growing like wild fire.

We often get discouraged when we’ve prayed for loved ones and others and see no harvest. It feels like our prayers bounce off the ceiling. The key words are it feels like. The good news is that God’s saving work goes on whether we feel up or down. Faith maintains that the tiny mustard seed will become a great tree, and it does. Keep on praying and planting.

Lord, forgive my puny faith. I praise your great works both visible and invisible.
