Unfulfilled Desires

READ : Luke 1:24-45

And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord. (v. 45)

Elizabeth was a faithful and blameless follower of God. Her husband, Zechariah, was a priest held in high esteem. Yet, their desires and hopes for a child were in vain for much of their life. Their plans for a child were not met, and they lived with an earthly desire that appeared to go unanswered. Their story acts as an example of the times in life where our wants can become enmeshed in God’s plan for us.

As missionaries in Hungary, we knew a couple who had, for many years, hoped for a family. Although this was their earthly wish, they trusted that what was meant to be for their marriage would happen, and they had served the Lord as missionaries for much of their married life. Similar to Elizabeth, their prayers were answered much later; their children were born when his wife was in her late forties. At that point, they no longer hoped or planned for a family. Yet it happened.

For many of us, this story is not really about wanting a child and thus waiting on God’s timing. Instead, it can be seen as a universal desire to have God hear our needs. Do you ever doubt that God is aware of your deepest desires? Do you sometimes wonder if he hears you? It is clear that he hears and he knows. Remain faithful, trust, and believe.

Lord, I believe. Leave your mark on my life.
