Believe in Them, as You Believe in Him

Fred Wilgenburg

READ : Acts 3:1-10

[They] recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. (v. 10)

I was amazed when Jared came to Center of Hope’s work training program. He was staying at a shelter, as he had for years. We learned that Jared is intelligent and he has goals. He would like his own place to avoid harassment and so that he can sleep better. Then he wants to find a steady job, rather than temporary jobs.

Like many struggling people, Jared has received little respect and affirmation. With little love and encouragement from others, it’s no wonder people can act demanding or selfish. But Jesus looked beyond that. He cared about every person he met, regardless of status. The disciples followed Jesus’ example with the healing of the crippled beggar in Acts 3. With similar compassion and investment perhaps Jared could respond likewise, with thanksgiving and praise to God. Imagine Jared working a steady job and praising God!

Jared is made in God’s image, giving him enormous capacity. Let’s move beyond tolerance and start believing in people like Jared, because we believe in God.

Father, help us see each person as you do, specially created in your image. Through Jesus, amen.
