Everything We Need

READ : Philippians 4:10-19

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. (2 Peter 1:3 NIV)

It sounds like Paul and Peter are singing a duet about the goodness of God. In Philippians Paul sings that God will supply all we need out of his riches in glory, while Peter sings that God already has given us everything we need by his divine power. Did you notice how Peter connects God’s provision of everything we need with our knowledge of Christ? Here’s what he means.

God has already given us everything we need to live, both now and for all eternity. But we don’t believe that. So we worry and we work our fingers to the bone, because we don’t know Christ enough. God has already given us everything we need to become the godly people he wants us to be. But we don’t believe that. So we feel guilty and we get discouraged and we try this and we give up on that, because we don’t know Christ enough.

By his own glory and goodness displayed in his death and resurrection, Christ has called us to a full and beautiful life here and there. We know that, but we don’t really know that, because we don’t know Christ in that personal interactive way. We can experience the possibilities of life only “through our knowledge of him.”

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, we have settled for less than your best. Make us grow in our knowledge of you and thus experience everything you intend our lives to be. Amen.
