Press On

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. (v. 12 NIV)

For a solid month we have focused on knowing Christ. I alliterated the various movements of our meditations to help you keep track of our progress: the passion, the possibilities, the preliminaries, the practices, and the proof. Now we end with one more p. Press on.

Maybe you are tired of this topic and want to think about something else for a while. Maybe you are discouraged by the difficulty of knowing Christ and feel like giving up. Paul must have felt something like the latter. He knew very well that he hadn’t achieved his goal of knowing Christ, in spite of his passionate and disciplined pursuit of that knowledge.

His imperfect knowledge didn’t hold him back. Indeed, he pressed on with the persistent intensity of a marathon runner, not because he was afraid of losing his salvation, but because he was so sure of his salvation. He knew that Christ had taken hold of him.

But Paul wanted to know that Christ better, so he pressed on. May we do the same, because the better we know him, the more we will enjoy “the prize” even here and now. Here’s how Jesus said it. “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3 NIV).

Lord, give me the discipline to press on in my passion to know Christ. Amen.
