The Third Day He Rose Again

John Tousley

Read: Romans 4:16-25

Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. (vv. 24-25)

As Christians we believe that Jesus “was offered in sacrifice for our sins, and rose again, to show that he had [obtained] forgiveness for them, and was accepted of God in this offering” (Matthew Henry, commenting on 1 Cor. 15:3). The apostle Paul promised that a right standing with God will be graciously credited to ungodly sinners who have trust, like Abraham, in God’s ability to give resurrection life—especially evident in the miraculous resurrection of Jesus our Lord (v. 24)!

Steve was a true friend when I served as a rural pastor. He was a loving husband, a respected church elder, and a kind caretaker for more than 20 cats! Our risen Savior had really gotten hold of Steve. He was thankful, straightforward, and gentle. Steve and Millie often invited us over to their house for fellowship. Millie would sit close to our little daughter Megan and read a children’s story with her.

During our last week in that country pastorate, the parsonage phone started ringing and ringing in the middle of the night. Steve’s heart had stopped, and they were unable to revive him. This dear friend had been there for me, and ministered to my family, all along the way. Steve was a prayerful believer in Jesus, whose resurrection the third day assures all who are “in Christ” of life beyond death! —John Tousley

Prayer: Risen Savior Jesus, you comfort us, as believers, with forgiveness and eternal life in heaven!
