Read: Romans 8:31-39
Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. (v. 34)
As Christians we believe that the risen Christ gloriously ascended into heaven, as our royal prayer partner. He died for us in love, was raised, is now at his Father’s right hand as the King, and lovingly prays for us through all our earthly troubles (v. 34). The ESV Study Bible notes: “He intercedes for his people on the basis of his shed blood.”
My mother’s story illustrates the ascended Christ’s present, beneficial activity. She was a devoted homemaker and an excellent teacher, especially while my sisters and I were growing up. Yet even with these responsibilities, which often kept her up until the wee hours of the morning, she traveled the highway on Thursday evenings to visit her elderly grandmother.
After greeting her grandma with a hug and kiss, my mom talked with her about things they could both recall, such as the pleasant times when her grandma used to take her for an ice cream treat! Together they sang old gospel hymns of faith, like “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!” At the close of each visit, my mom would lovingly hold her grandma’s wrinkled hand and faithfully pray for her. What a reminder that we have an even greater intercessor—our ascended Savior. —John Tousley
Prayer: Ascended Jesus, your prayers give us courage to face the giant challenges of the day ahead.
