The Life Everlasting

John Tousley

Read: 1 Corinthians 2:1-10

What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him. (v. 9)

Living in daily relationship with God our heavenly Father through Jesus his only Son, we are presently enjoying a (faint) sample of heaven now! “Eternal life” is about knowing God who lovingly sent Jesus (John 17:3). So, for believers in Jesus, the life everlasting has begun in the present life!

And when death comes, those who trust in Jesus have the sure hope of everlasting life in heaven! Paul wrote invitingly of heaven: “what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor. 2:9). Jesus the King taught more specifically of “the kingdom prepared for you” (Matt. 25:34).

A simple story highlights the comforting truth of the life everlasting. Jack offered worship services for older persons in nursing homes. He cared about them, sensitive to the fact that they were lonesome and in need of encouragement, especially as they neared the end of life here. He delivered messages about a loving God, our Lord and Savior Jesus, and the Spirit of God. He reminded his hearers that we are only sinners saved by grace. On one occasion, while faithfully speaking about the Christian believer’s assurance of heaven and the life everlasting, Jack mentioned “the realms of glory.” Before you know it he got so caught up, it was as if he was really there! And the tears of joy and anticipation flowed. —John Tousley

Prayer: Loving God, by your grace, we look forward to praising you together always in your glorious heavenly kingdom.
