Crave Spiritual Milk

Steven Laman

Read: 1 Peter 2:1-3

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation. (v. 2 NIV)

I was chatting online with an adult who has cerebral palsy like me. He was complaining that someone has to feed him, dress him, and many times basically treat him like a baby. Even though I only communicated with him a few times, one of his statements has stuck with me: “Can I be a baby?” My first thought was, “What an odd request.”

Even though his statement sounded strange, it is similar to what the apostle Peter wrote, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk. . .” We might think the apostle’s phrasing is out of the ordinary, too. To understand what he meant, we have to understand that the “pure spiritual milk” Peter is describing is the Word of God. A mother’s milk gives babies the nutrients they need to grow, and the Bible gives us everything we need to become mature Christians. It is the perfect guide for living and it shows us how to live forever by accepting Jesus. There is nothing wrong with reading other books and devotionals to help us understand the Bible, but nothing can beat the pure Word of God.

We should all be like babies, just drinking in every word of the Bible. Do we crave the pure spiritual milk of the Word of God? It gives all the nutrition we need for this life and the life to come. —Steve Laman

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the Bible. Help us crave that spiritual milk daily.
