Slaves No More

Joy Petroelje

Read: Exodus 14:23-31

Israel saw the great power that the LORD used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the LORD, and they believed in the LORD and in his servant Moses. (v. 31)

You split the sea, so I could walk right through it
My fears were drowned in perfect love
You rescued me so I could stand and sing
I am a child of God

When I hear the music of “No Longer Slaves” by Brian Johnson, Jonathan David Helser, and Joel Case, I wonder what it would have been like to be an Israelite, witnessing God’s unmatched power.

God not only made a path, but also chose to close the waters over the Egyptians so his people would be entirely free. There was no need to fear that Pharaoh and his army would choose another route, catch them later, and enslave them yet again. God defeated their enemy completely.

It is easy to forget this is our God. A God who is both powerful and loving. If you are feeling fear today—of the past, present or future—let God’s perfect love comfort you. Know that Jesus’ blood freed you from slavery and death, and you can never go back to that slavery. And praise God just as the Israelites did, grateful for his grace and in awe of his majesty. May we all joyfully and boldly say we are no longer slaves to fear, but we are children of God.—Joy Petroelje

Prayer: God of deliverance, thank you for drowning my fears and calling me your child.
