Powerful and Effective

Read: James 5:13-18

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. (v. 16 NIV)

People today are attracted to whatever is efficient and effective. New inventions aim to make a task or tool easier, faster, and more powerful and effective. Can our prayers be more powerful and effective? The Bible says yes! Effective prayer takes the focus off the person and directs the petition to the God who hears and answers. Powerful prayer has more to do with who we are praying to than what we are praying for.

In today’s passage, the apostle James more or less just encourages us to pray. No formula, just the situations in which we should pray. We pray as ordinary people who worship an extraordinary God! James says that people today are just like Elijah, a fellow human being and all that goes with it. Prayer is effective, not because of “spiritual giants” who pray so eloquently, but because of an incredible God who, in Christ, graciously hears his people. The main ingredient is God. Focusing on how powerful and effective God is will lead us to pray more powerful and effective prayers.

Do you realize the amazing gift we have in prayer itself? We can speak directly to our Creator anytime, anywhere. James says pray when you are troubled, happy, sick, in need, and when you have sinned. Pray also when you just need to talk. Your heavenly Father loves you and wants to hear from you. Will you pray right now? —Tim Huizenga

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to focus on you and how powerful and effective you are. Amen.
