Read: Psalm 145
The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. (v. 18)
My wife and I recently had our first child. When he needs something, he lets out a loud cry. When one of us speaks gently to him, he knows that his voice has been heard, and he is calmed.
We all have the desire to be heard. When we need something, we want to be listened to. When we feel anxiety, we want to be understood. When we experience joy, we want to let others know. It is comforting to hear the voice of someone who listens to our cries. The psalmist says, “The LORD is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made . . . The LORD is near to all who call on him” (v. 18). We can take comfort in knowing that the God who created all things cares enough to listen to our cries. The psalmist adds, “He also hears their cry and saves them” (v. 19).
God desires to be the first one to hear about our lives. He wants to hear about our trials, joys, anxieties, and thankfulness. We can be thankful in knowing that God listens to all of our prayers. Just like when a child hears a calming voice and is comforted, we too can trust that God hears us when we pray and know that he loves us as his own. —Mike Hooker
Prayer: God, thank you for sending your Spirit to be our comforter and for hearing our cries and answering us when we call to you. Amen.
