Do Not Be Afraid

Read: 1 Peter 4:12-16

Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God. (v. 16)

Few of us living in North America experience “fiery trials” because of our faith in Jesus. Yet persecution is a reality for Christians in many places. Kashmir is located at the border between India and Pakistan, and it has been the site of fierce conflict between these countries. It is also the site of intense persecution for Christians.

In November 2011, the pastor of Kashmir’s only open church was arrested on false charges, and the names of some members of his congregation—including Words of Hope’s ministry leader—were published in the local newspaper and online as a clear threat. Our ministry leader and his family were forced to flee the province, abandoning their belongings and Words of Hope’s radio recording studio inside Kashmir.

Christians remain in this hard place, but they are forced to live quietly without attracting attention. Hakim is one of our new Kashmiri producers, making programs that are broadcast in Kashmir. “God has called us here for his ministry,” he says. “We need to be careful, but not fearful. Because when God is with us, we do not need to fear.” Hakim’s words are a challenge to all Christians and reflect the challenge given in 1 Peter. Remember, you are part of a body that suffers. What can you do to encourage those brothers and sisters in Christ who are experiencing persecution today? —Christy Prins, WOH staff

Prayer: Lord, open our eyes to your living body of believers around the world who are suffering for their allegiance to you. Amen.
