God Is the Creator of Life

Steve Petroelje

Read: Romans 1:18-25

His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world. (v. 20)

As I write this, I am spending time in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Today I visited Mount Rushmore National Memorial. It took fourteen years for sculptor Gutzon Borglum and the workers to complete the four faces carved in the rock in 1941. God, the creator, designer, and sculptor of our world, only had to speak to create the heavens and the earth, and it only took six days! God created the rock that makes Mount Rushmore possible. He created the birds, trees, and scenic views that surround it. He created the workers and the four presidents whose likenesses the sculpture bears. After the world was created, “God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good” (Gen. 1:31).

If only the sinless beauty of God’s creation had not been tainted by sin (Genesis 3). If we are going to understand the good news of the gospel, we must realize that God created us and loves us. Just as visitors drive to famous landmarks to appreciate their beauty, we can experience the wondrous love of God as he reveals himself to us and calls us into a redeemed relationship with him. For that to happen, we must acknowledge him as our creator, sustainer, and redeemer. All creation declares that he is the creator of life and we have no way to deny it (Rom. 1:20). —Steve Petroelje

Prayer: Creator God, I praise you for the goodness of your creation and the love you have for me. Amen.
