Behind the Window (Part 1): A Wicked Heir

Read: 1 Kings 21; 2 Kings 9

When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it . . . and looked out of the window. . . He said, “Throw her down.” (2 Kings 9:30, 33)

Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family refused to let the angels stay in the guestroom. Instead, they were given space in the cold basement. As they made their bed, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, “I noticed there was gold in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share, I sealed the wall, so he wouldn’t find it. Things aren’t always what they seem.”

Jezebel, a princess, appears fit to be a perfect queen. But she is far from perfect. She worships a false god, murders God’s prophets, and plots to have a man killed for his family’s vineyard. Jezebel’s wickedness is severely punished. Eventually, her servants kill her by throwing her out the window, and God uses a new king to wipe out her husband’s entire bloodline.

We can’t hide from God. He knows our wicked heart, hears our unkind thoughts, and sees our sinful actions. Through Jesus’ blood, God gives us a way to escape the punishment and death we deserve. Let’s accept the blood of Jesus that washes away our wickedness, so we can stand perfect before God.
