Our Heavenly Father

Read: Luke 11:5-13

How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! (v. 13 NIV)

Right after teaching them what we call “The Lord’s Prayer,” Jesus told his disciples a little story. In this story, Jesus is commending the steady persistence of the man who goes knocking at midnight. He won’t get the bread because of his neighbor’s friendship, but his bold, continuous appeal will finally win what he needs for his visiting friend. The plain message here is the remarkable power of hanging on in prayer.

Listen to how Jesus confirms this: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” How could he make it clearer that persistent prayer will prevail? But then, to our amazement, Jesus does make it clearer! He repeats those three powerful affirmations in this even stronger way: “For everyone who asks receives.” Christians, take fresh heart. Jesus has given a sixfold promise that our persistent prayers will never be in vain.

Let me tell you now how much the words in Luke 11:13 have meant to me. For the last few decades, I don’t believe there was ever a day when I did not plead this very promise before God. It involves the grandest of all gifts. God will bestow his own creative, life-giving Spirit to his praying people—over and over again! God will never fail to breathe this Almighty Comforter into us whenever we ask him afresh. —Bill Brownson

Prayer: Father, we bless you that you keep on giving your Holy Spirit to all who keep on asking.
